I came across this idea called the flywheel effect—how small, steady pushes can build unstoppable momentum. It sounded simple enough, but I wanted to see it in action.
Then, I met this really fit guy. He was talking about his fat loss journey, how it felt painfully slow at first, but then—boom. One day, the effort started paying off, and everything got easier. The more he stuck with it, the less he had to think about it. That got me thinking: could I do the same with my coffee habit?
It’s been one week. Not long enough to say I’m free, but long enough to feel the shift. I’ve made the first push—swapping coffee for tea. I’ve hit the consistent effort stage—one full week without coffee. Now, I’m working toward takeoff, which for me means three months of sticking with it.
And that’s exactly how habits work—like a flywheel.
Step 1: The First Push (Starting Small)
Every habit change starts with a conscious decision. At first, it feels slow, maybe even unnatural. The results aren’t immediate, so it’s easy to wonder, Is this even worth it?
For me, the first push was choosing tea over coffee. Was it the same? Not quite. But it was a small, deliberate step in the right direction.
Step 2: Consistent Effort (Building Momentum)
Momentum builds when an action becomes part of your routine. The more you repeat it, the less effort it takes.
Now, after a week without coffee, I don’t crave it as much. Reaching for tea instead is becoming second nature. But this is the tricky part—the flywheel isn’t fully spinning on its own yet. I still have to push.
Step 3: The Takeoff (Effortless Action)
This is when the habit becomes automatic. You don’t think about it anymore—it just happens.
For me, that milestone will be three months without coffee. By then, (hopefully) the flywheel should be turning smoothly, making the habit feel natural rather than forced.
If you’re working on a habit shift—whether it’s drinking more water, waking up earlier, or cutting back on social media—remember this: the hardest part is the beginning. Keep going, and soon, momentum will take over.
Love Always,
Tilly
